| dance, world music The Three Jacks & The Breffni Academy Dancers Friday, August 1 @ 8 p.m. The Three Jacks is one of America's most entertaining and unique Celtic rock bands. "Powerful, awe-inspiring, soul-firing music" says Street magazine The Jacks start with a mix of much-loved traditional Scottish and Irish songs, they then fold in their mistreatments of the folk/baroque classics, whip in brand new numbers from their "catalog of 18th century folk-songs we wrote last week," and leaven the whole heady brew with rip-out, stomping, fiddle break-downs. Kids get on stage and dance. The crowd sings and laughs along with the band. And everyone goes home happy.
Joining The Jacks at The Adrienne Arsht Center will be international award-winning step dancers from The Breffni Academy of Irish Dance. This performance is the kick-off show for their "Angels With a Mission" tour, to raise funds for the relief of children still living in the wreckage of last year's earthquake in Southern Peru. | jazz, latin entertainment, world music Cacao Musica presents Cosecha 2008: Aquiles Baez - La Patilla August 2 @ 8:15 p.m. The second concert in the Cosecha 2008 series will feature Venezuelan-born, Berklee-trained guitarist, Aquiles Baez, who has worked with a "who's who" list of Latin-inspired jazz innovators such as Paquito D'Rivera, Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, Romero Lubambo and more. Doubling on the nylon-string cuatro (a Venezuelan cousin of the ukelele), Aquiles melds folkloric and modernist influences in ingenious ways, as reflected on his marvelous new Cacao album La Patilla ("The Watermelon"). Citing the inspiration of Jobim, Pascoal, Gismonti, Baden Powell and Astor Piazzolla as well as the painter Armando Reverón, Aquiles says, "I chase the vivid tonalities of our landscapes, the orchestra of colors that is produced in our tropic and particularly, in my land, Venezuela." According to acclaimed Venezuelan journalist Leonardo Padron, "Listen to this album and pay special attention to her words, just as someone pays attention to a lover's skin. Poetry is present in this entire project. It shows how Luz Marina has grown in her career as a music writer. Her voice has always been an erotic instrument, but this time there is something subtle in it, something close to its boiling point." Carnival Studio Theater |
